The Vestibular Implant

The vestibular organs provide the brain with movement information. From this, there are three main functions that result: gaze stabilisation (‘vestibular-cochlea reflex’), balance/postural stability and spatial orientation. In addition it controls the movement of the eyes during head movement to prevent blurred vision during rapid movement or movement of the head. When the function of the balance organs decreases, patients may experience blurred vision during movement, decreased memory, difficulty maintaining physical balance, cognitive symptoms such as problems with concentration and short-term memory, and even psychological problems. Patients with serious problems may even be unable to work. At present, there is no other solution that can help patients restore the function of their balance organs, than vestibular implantation as a possible solution that may help patients solve the problem off decreased balance organ function.
